Hounds are often thought of as the original hunting dog. Most hound breeds were originally bred for the characteristics that made them better partners for their masters when on the hunt. Though most hound dogs have the instinct for the hunt in common, how the instinct manifests itself in the dog is almost as diverse ad the dogs themselves.
There is a class of hounds that hunt mainly by sight, these are also known as "gaze hounds" and include the Scottish Deerhound, the Greyhound and the Afghan among others.
There are the scent hound breeds that include the Bloodhound and the Coonhound. And then there are the hounds that were bred to have great stamina to track and be on the trail for hours like the Foxhound and the Beagle.
There are other qualities that diversify the hounds. Some breeds have the instinct for baying and have a cultivated voice that can be heard for miles. Others, like the Basenji are so quiet that the are considered mute by many, though this is not so.
If you are a hound person you appreciate a dog that is laid back and can enjoy a good siesta. Though some folk consider certain hound breeds to be in a state of perpetual torpor, this is not so. Your hound friend will be up and ready for a romp at a moment's notice…. Then again, a longer nap is always worth considering.
